Ortho Tri-Cyclen for Women

March 20th, 2010

This is a prescription birth control pill that is taken one time every day to avoid any unwanted pregnancy in women. This pill has a nice side effect too; it helps to clear your face if you are suffering from an acne problem. It is best used for women that have reached the age of at least 15.

Ortho Tri-Cyclen is best used when taken as prescribed; most women choose to take the pill in the morning during their grooming routine as not to forget. It is best if you take the pill at the same time each day and let it become part of our morning or evening ritual whichever you prefer.

The Ortho Tri-Cyclen prescription is designed to release a small amount of hormone into your body each day which prevents the ovum from producing the egg that causes pregnancy; it will make the cervical mucus thicker therefore making it more difficult for the sperm to pass through into the uterus. The side effect is the reduction of a hormone that causes increased acne in women and nearly 9 out of every 10 women report clearing of their acne and overall skin condition is improved.

Side effects are as follows:

  • Nausea
  • Soreness in breasts
  • Weight gain
  • Irregular menstrual flow

Some symptoms should not be ignored so if you experience shortness of breath, swelling of hands and ankles or start having chest pains you should stop taking this medication and consult your physician immediately.

Ortho Tri-Cyclen should not be taken if you are already pregnant or plan on being pregnant. You should speak to your physician if you plan on having children in the near future so he can come up with a treatment plan that is safe for you and your child.

Let your doctor know if there are other prescription drugs you are taking because they can decrease the effectiveness of the birth control. If you miss a dose you should take extra care to avoid pregnancy by using other forms of birth control until your next menstrual cycle. If you are prescribed another medication for other conditions it is also vital to remind your doctor that you’re taking this pill.

If your family planning does not include a child at this time it is best to speak with your doctor to see if Ortho Tri-Cyclen is the best form of birth control for you. As with many other drugs women who smoke put themselves at a higher risk of stroke and other complications so if you are a smoker it is best to quit while undergoing birth control of this type.  Speak to your doctor and be informed so you do not find yourself in the position of an unwanted pregnancy.
