Can I Get Birth Control and Acne Control all in One Pill?

February 10th, 2010

If you have ever asked yourself this question the answer is a big yes. With the Ortho Tri-Cyclen pill not only can you save yourself from an unwanted pregnancy, you can free yourself of that ugly unwanted acne at the same time.  Because this pill offers two separate hormones to prevent pregnancy, the main side effect if that’s what you want to call it, is the reduced amount of acne on your face and skin. Not only will you have the comfort in knowing you’re protected from pregnancy, you will notice clearer skin in the process.

There are certain conditions that may prevent you from taking this pill and they are as follows:

  • If you have recently given birth
  • Plan to be pregnant within the next couple of months
  • Have a history of stroke or blood clots
  • Are over the age of 35 and smoke

Before taking the pill you should discuss with your doctor the choice of care if you have had or do have any of the previously mentioned conditions. If you are over the age of 35 and still want to go on this medication it is best if you quit smoking while on the medication, your risk becomes higher for stroke and heart disease and can easily be prevented by quitting smoking.

Some of the side effects of Ortho Tri-Cyclen include nausea, vomiting, weight gain and spotting between periods but these side effects are not long lasting and can usually clear themselves up after the first couple of months of treatment. If you have prolonged side effects then it would be best to talk to your doctor about your symptoms. If you notice a swelling in the feet or hands sop taking your medication and contact your physician immediately.

Although Ortho Tri-Cyclen is a very effective form of birth control it is important that you take your pills as prescribed and not miss one day. If you happen to miss one day of your pill then it is best if you use condoms or another form of birth control until your next cycle begins because you do not want to find yourself pregnant because you forgot a pill.

If you need medication for another condition make sure your doctor knows you’re on the pill because many medications can lower the effectiveness of Ortho Tri-Cyclen.

If you would like to learn more about this or any other form of birth control you should make an appointment with your physician or a family planning center. There they will go over all of the risks and benefits and give you a chance to learn all that you need to know about planning your family.
